Many fantasy football leagues are very disappointed when their season ends
along with NFL regular season. People have been asking us for years about ways
to play fantasy football through the NFL playoffs. There have always been two
major problems with playing during the post season; first, there are only 12
playoff teams and because of that there are not enough players for typical
rosters, and second, the playoff teams are not determined until the last week of
the season, leaving no time to get materials for the draft.
We have come up with solutions for both of these problems.
Fantasy Football for the NFL Playoffs
How to Configure your league and play. These ideas are not meant to change your regular league so that it may
continue through the NFL playoffs , but are meant to be used for a separate
league with a separate draft to be played during the NFL Playoffs and Super
Bowl. These ideas are only one way to play, but after many years of research, we
think they work best.
How to configure your league:
The league should be set up as a total points league not a head to head league,
using the scoring system that you already have in place, divide your league into
two divisions and have two player drafts using two complete pools of players.
This is done because there are only 12 NFL teams in the playoffs and the amount
of players is much smaller than in the regular season. No
player can be picked twice in the same draft, but each player can be used twice
in the league. When the draft is over, the two divisions are combined and the
league is complete. Scoring is done on a rotiseriee format ( total points
scored) with the team having the most points at the end of the NFL Super Bowl
being the winner, and so on.
After the draft, players can only be picked up from the free
agent pool from the same division the coach drafted. This way no person can have
two of the same player. We suggest that there are no trades because the season
is so short.
Players get points as long as their team is still playing. Picking players takes
a lot of planning and
strategy, because you want to have players that will be in the most games, not
just the best players. The reason for this is the best teams have a bye week
during the Wild Card games, so if you pick Donovan McNabb, he might not be playing
in the first week and you would get no points.
Free agents can only be picked up to replace a player that is still playing. If
a player’s team is eliminated, that player cannot be replaced. This is a game of
attrition. Most of the time the winner will be the team that has the most
players left playing in the Super Bowl. The person who won our league last year
was the person stuck with 3 Packers players and hated his team leaving the
draft.
The winner of the league is the team with the most total points after the Super
Bowl. You can divide up your prizes in any way you want.
